CLASS Coalition hosted a webinar with a team from the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics (NCSSM) on “Effective Advising for High Achieving Students.” NCSSM presenters included Terry Lynch, Vice Chancellor for Student Life; Lori Hackney, Dean of Counseling; Angela Teachey, Math Coordinator and Instructor; and Kathleen Allen, Registrar, who shared changes made to the school’s advising program in order to better meet the needs of the students in the areas of academic advising, college advising and mental health support. NCSSM also discussed step-by-step strategies to implement when talking with a student who needs emotional support, and the school’s focus on non cognitive variables (e.g., setting long-term goals and ensuring the availability of a strong support person) that research has identified to be supportive of student success in higher education.
